HomeFree-USA Receives $5.6 million to Support

Foreclosure Prevention Counseling Efforts

Grant provides much-needed boost to homeowners nationwide

in danger of foreclosure

Hyattsville, MD – Today HomeFree-USA announced that it has received $5.6 million to support foreclosure prevention counseling efforts.  The much-needed boost will enable HomeFree-USA and its nationwide network of community-based nonprofit partners to provide more foreclosure counseling than ever before to homeowners in danger of foreclosure.

"We are thrilled to continue the work we began last year," said Marcia Griffin, founder and president of HomeFree-USA. "Last year our network provided foreclosure prevention counseling for more than 10,000 homeowners. This funding will allow us to save more homes, more families and more communities around the country."

The grant to support HomeFree-USA's foreclosure intervention efforts was provided by funds from the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program.  The initial funding was provided by Congress in the FY08 Consolidated Appropriations Act and additional funding was provided through the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. The National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program is administered through a competitive application process by NeighborWorks® America, within guidelines defined by Congressional legislation. NeighborWorks America is an independent, Congressionally-chartered non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., with a mission to provide access to sustainable homeownership and safe, affordable rental housing.

Established in 1995, HomeFree-USA is a minority-founded, 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization specializing in homeownership development and foreclosure intervention. It is one of only 15 HUD-approved organizations currently receiving congressional funding to act as an intermediary between homeowners and lenders to prevent foreclosure.

Based in the greater Washington, DC, area with branch offices in Atlanta and Kansas City, HomeFree-USA provides services across the country through its 82-member network of faith- and community-based nonprofit partners. The HomeFree-USA network represents 1.5 million homeowners and homebuyers and enjoys a 0% foreclosure rate among families enlisting in its pre- and post-purchase counseling activities.  To learn more, visit http://www.homefreeusa.org/.
